Dussehra is a major Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navratri every year observed on the full moon day in the Hindu calendar in the month observed on the full moon day in the Hindu calendar. Dussehra or Vijayadashami is observed for different reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian Subcontinent. 


The eastern and northeastern states of India celebrate Vijayadashami since it marks the end of Durga Puja remembering goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon to help restore Dharma. The northern, southern and western states celebrate Dussehra since it marks the end of "Ramlila" and  Rama's victory over the demon Ravana and the triumph of good over evil.


On the eve of Dussehra towering effigies of Ravana symbolizing the evil is burnt with fireworks marking evil's destruction and Performances of the Ramlila (a short version of the epic Ramayana) in Northern India. Many Hindus also believe that it is lucky to start a new venture, project or journey on Dussehra since it is considered an auspicious occasion.
