Shaheed Udham Singh’s 77th martyrdom day

Udham Singh was an Indian revolutionary, best known for assassinating Sir Michael O'Dwyer (former Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in British India) on 13th March 1940 to avenge the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. Sometimes referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh is a well-known figure of the Indian independence movement. 


To avenge the Death of Jallianwalla Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, Udham Singh shot O'Dwyer twice at a joint meeting of the East India Association and the Central Asian Society (now Royal Society for Asian Affairs) at Caxton Hall, London on 13th March 1940. He did not attempt to flee and was arrested on site, and during the trial he was given a Death Sentence. On 31st July 1940, Singh was hanged at Pentonville Prison while his remains are preserved at the Jallianwalla Bagh in Amritsa, Punjab.


Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi also paid his respect through his latest tweet that read, "The valour of Shaheed Udham Singh remains etched in the memory of every Indian. I bow to this brave son of India on his martyrdom day".


Thousands laid down their lives so that our country breath this day...Never forget their Sacrifice!
