'Disco King' Alvida: Bappi Lahiri passes away at 69 after battling a serious illness for a year

Musician and singer Bappi Lahiri, who popularized disco music in India in the 80s and 90s, died on Tuesday at Criticare Hospital in Mumbai. He was 69 years old. Hospital director Dr. Deepak Namjoshi told PTI that "Lahiri was admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But on Tuesday, his health deteriorated and his family called a doctor to their home. He was again brought to the hospital." he later stated, “Bappi Lahiri passed away a little before midnight. When the family got him to the hospital his blood pressure was low and the pulse couldn’t be felt. We tried to revive him but it was too late.”


Bappi Lahiri, well known as the "Disco King" in India, was born and brought up in Calcutta, West Bengal in 1952 into a family with a rich custom in traditional music. He began his profession as a music director at the youthful age of 19. His dad, Aparesh Lahiri was an eminent Bengali vocalist and his mom, Bansari Lahiri was a performer and an artist who was knowledgeable in old-style music and Shyama Sangeet.


He got his first chance to sing a melody in the Bengali film, Dadu (1972). By then, he began making a name by working in Hindi movies with Nanha Shikari (1973). He secured himself in Bollywood with Tahir Hussain's Hindi film, Zakhmi (1975), and left an imprint as a playback vocalist.

The artist as of late remixed his hit melody 'Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re' named 'Aja Pyaar Kar Le' for Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar starrer 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan'. The melody was initially picturized on Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh in Anil Ganguly's "Saheb". Well known in the last part of the 1970s-80s for soundtracks like Disco Dancer, Namak Halal, and Dance Dance, they assisted better with coordinating blended disco music with Indian film.
